Frequently Asked Questions
How does this work?
Using our beta tool, we help you generate a .htaccess file that you place
on your web server. The file you generate is written to block out the bots
you choose.
Requirements for beta?
Requirements for .htaccess is apache 1 or 2 running windows/linux server.
Will this hurt me in the search
engines? Will I make Google mad?
Absolutely not. The BotSense .htaccess beta tool ONLY blocks out unwanted,
rogue bots that YOU DO NOT NEED OR WANT. It has nothing to do with
legitimate search engines.
Can't I just use robots.txt to
block bad bots?
Robots.txt is only a suggestion for most bots about what they can or can
not do. It does not prevent them from doing what they wish. Most bad bots
will ignore robots.txt. On the other hand, a .htaccess file with the
proper directives enforces whatever rules you put into place. Using this
method, most bots will be stopped dead in their tracks.
Can I try this on more than one
website of mine?
Yes. Although you will need to add the .htaccess file on all of your
webservers you want to block bots on.
Is this legal?
Yes. It's your website, you can tell anyone not to visit it if you wish.
How do you determine what bots are
good and bad?
Our team has spent countless hours researching the bots that you don't
need. You can choose which bots you want to block on your own, we only
list them for you.
How many bots can I block?
The beta lists several highly unwanted bots, with a more extensive list
coming soon.
